Week 13 Part A: Online Advertising - Analysis of the Marketplace

In this part, I am going to analyze how advertising or sponsored posts on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media. At this time, I chose Instagram as a research subject because this is my favorite social media and I use it everyday.

First of all, I opened Instagram on my smartphone, then we can see many posts which were posted by friends or someone you follow. Scrolling these posts, sometimes advertisements such as Walmart, Bose, Lee, and so on are shown up. Many kinds of businesses utilize Instagram as a place to advertise, therefore, we can see differences among the businesses’ advertisements. For example, I pick up the hopper, which is the app that can find reasonable price to stay at a hotel, because they had the good advertisement. This business posted a video to introduce what hopper is, and it showed me a hotel we have to pay just $56 a night in New York. In addition, they offered us to get a great coupon when we download this app and sign up. Like this, we can get a lot of information through this one videos, and I think this advertisement is so attractive. As far as I know, I could not find annoying advertisements on Instagram. I would say this is because You just need to scroll down the screen if you find boring advertisements. Hopper has a link to install this app, therefore, we can use it smoothly through this video.

Compared with traditional advertising, I believe advertisements on social media are more effective because the gap of the number of viewers between traditional advertising and recent advertising is totally different. Social media is far larger than traditional advertising as everyone has a smartphone or a device which can use internet. Also, advertising on social media can use a video, so they can include a lot of information in one video. On the other hand, traditional advertising, like a newspaper, is limited the space to post on. That is why this is disadvantageous.

In Japan, a company that collects things, such as TV or appliances, that are no longer needed uses both of advertising. When I looked for something on Facebook, I found this advertisement. In addition, this business call someone’s telephone randomly to ask customers whether they have some stuff. I think this is also advertising. To be honest, I would say it is annoying because they call us, then we have to answer the phone. This type of business’s advertisement could make customers uncomfortable, therefore I would not use it like this advertisement.
